Artist Embarks on Nationwide Journey to Capture 1,000 Eyes of Britain
Norfolk, UK — 17th September 2025
Independent photographer and artist Elton Cilliers has launched an ambitious nationwide project, Eyes of Britain: Life Through 1,000 Eyes, with a mission to photograph and edit the irises of 1,000 people across the UK — creating a unique visual record of modern Britain through its most personal feature: the eye.
The project combines Cilliers’ 40+ years behind the lens with his artistic editing style to transform each participant’s iris into a one-of-a-kind artwork. More than just an art project, Eyes of Britain seeks to tell the stories behind the eyes — from personal reflections on “My Britain” to local heroes nominated by their communities.
“Every iris is different. By capturing 1,000 of them across every county, I hope to create a portrait of Britain that is as diverse and authentic as the people who live here,” says Cilliers. “It’s not just about the images, it’s about the stories — what Britain means to us as individuals.”
The project is touring the country through pop-up photography events hosted in community venues, cafés, pubs, and cultural spaces. Participants not only receive a unique artwork of their own eye but are also invited to contribute to the larger national collection.
With at least 30–40% of event income reinvested into local communities, the initiative also supports small businesses and venues along the journey.
The completed collection of 1,000 eyes will form the basis of a nationwide exhibition series and digital archive, celebrating Britain’s diversity through art, photography, and storytelling.
